Welcome to the College Football Calculator. I don't really have much to say in this article, but I felt I should really get some content up. So, I am going to explain exactly what the calculator is, how it works, why I made it, and how you can help make this a better site!
Q: Ok, What IS the college football calculator?
Good Question! The calculator takes information on 2 selected FBS (Division 1A) college football teams and it breaks it down, manipulates it, weighs it, compares it, and spits out the calculated PREDICTION for what would happen when these 2 teams meet.
Q: So we know what it is, but how does it work?
I'm not going to tell you the exact algorithm I use, but basically I took all the possible stats I could find from the
NCAA National Rankings page and broke it down to figure out exactly what makes this specific team click. I do the same with team #2, and now I have 2 comparable profiles. They are then weighed based on
Jeff Sagarins Ratings, compared and compiled to come up with the calculated score and whatnot.
Q: Why did you even waste your time building this thing?
While I could ask you the same question for reading this... I won't. Simply put, I did it to keep my sanity. I am a software developer and sometimes working on uninteresting monotonous code drives me near the brink of insanity. So for the safty of myself and those within firing range, I have pet projects.
This one in particular algorithm made for the 2007 football season and it worked VERY well. So for no good reason I converted it to a web application for all the world to enjoy! I am so nice.
In the near future plan to find some talented writers to write up weekly college football related columns. That way you will have new stuff to read every week. That should help the days between games go a little faster. So if you love college football and have writing skills, email me your idea for a weekly article along with your contact information to
collegefootballcalc@gmail.com.
So thanks for stopping by and enjoy using the calculator, but remember the more data I collect the more I know about the teams. In other words, the calculator works better later in the season.
